On 13 February 2019, UNESCO will join efforts with several international and regional professional radio organizations, including the Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU) and its member radio corporations, to celebrate the 8th edition of World Radio Day.
This day marks a time when people around the world celebrate radio and how it shapes our lives. Radio informs, transforms and unites us. It brings together people and communities from all backgrounds to foster positive dialogue for change. More specifically, radio is the perfect medium to counter the appeals for violence and the spread of conflict, especially in regions potentially more exposed to such realities.
On that basis, World Radio Day 2019 will celebrate the theme of “Dialogue, Tolerance and Peace”. As part of the celebration, three ASBU member radio corporations from Kuwait, Egypt and Morocco will be sub-regional hubs to organize a number of events and celebration programs in celebration of WRD with a number of follow radio stations.
ASBU has also asked the Egyptian radio to represent Arab radio corporations in joining the live celebration open programming day to be organized by UNESCO all day long on Feb. 13 and broadcast worldwide.
Radio programming can build tolerance and surpass the differences separating groups by uniting them under common goals and causes, like ensuring education for one’s children or addressing local health concerns. Every radio station is encouraged and strongly invited to participate in this World Radio Day 2019 and celebrate the impact of radio in pursuing of a more peaceful and tolerant world.
