The Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU) expresses its heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies to Al Jazeera correspondent and bureau chief in Gaza, Wael Al-Dahdouh, following the martyrdom of a number of his family members including his wife, son, daughter, and grandson in an Israeli air raid on Wednesday October 25th, 2023. The blast hit a house in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza where the family was taking shelter after being displaced.
ASBU extends its condolences to the Palestinian people and all the martyrs' families, asking God Almighty to cover the martyrs who fell in these brutal attacks with his vast grace and mercy, to grant the wounded a speedy recovery and to bless the Palestinian People with patience and strength in this time of deep sorrow.
Mr. Dahdouh, a well-known journalist, was helping broadcast live images of the horrific war in Gaza when he received the devastating news. Committing such a crime is a poignant proof that the ultimate goal of the Israeli Occupation is to spread fear and terror and to attempt to silence the voices of those who unveil the ugly truth of the Israeli War Crimes.
Another proof is the martyrdom of journalist Duaa Sharaf and her child in the early hours of Thursday October 26th, 2023 after Israeli fighter jets fired multiple missiles at a residence in the Al-Zawaida area in the central Gaza Strip. This has raised the total number of journalists killed in Gaza since the beginning of the Israeli aggression to 24.
ASBU fiercely condemns the targeting of journalists and their families, recalling that relevant international conventions, treaties and laws prohibit and criminalize repression, detention, harassment, prosecution, of journalists while performing their work, especially in periods of crises and in areas of conflict and war.
ASBU strongly urges the relevant regional and international organizations to clearly and explicitly condemn the Israeli occupation targeting and killing of journalists and their innocent families in Gaza and to take immediate and serious action to stop this violation. ASBU also calls for international condemnation and criminal prosecution by relevant international entities.
